Show Jumping Classic
As the final competition of 2005 the Tipperary Hunt Branch were delighted when two of our older members Joan Widger (recently returned from England) and Jennifer Lalor both qualified for the Show Jumping Classic. The competition was tough with the best competitors from throughout the country taking part.
Jennifer Lalor ended the first two rounds perfectly earning here a place in the jump off. In a very tense affair, with some magnificant displays of horsemanship, Jenny did exceptionally well to finish in third position. A huge congratulations to her for a great achievemnet.

SANSAW 2005 - Beating the whole of the U.K.
Early on Sunday morning, two lorries set off with five horses, leaving home at 4 a.m. for the ferry in Dublin. When we were travelling along the motorway near Kildare we were astounded to see on the bridge above us a big poster wishing us all good luck, along with two members of the Kildare Pony Club who had been sitting there waiting for us since 4.30. What a fantastic send-off.
We were well kitted out by Josephine O’Hagan of Tipperary Tack who very swiftly managed to get team jackets and hats embroidered with the Tipp logo generously sponsoring them for the two teams and Bucas gave magnificent rugs for the dressage team winners, so it was with very smart riders and horses we all set off for England
We arrived at Sansaw about 4 p.m. on Sunday evening to find them still building the stables, and no other horses or competitors on site. Stuart, the championship director told us to find stables with a roof and choose our spot for camping, which we did – the best place of course!!
On Monday our third lorry arrived and the field was filling up fast, the horses were all exercised and we were well settled in. Tuesday was dressage day, and our 4 members all rode very nice tests, with which they were well pleased. Valerie was our highest placed member being 7th in her arena. Our team ended up 23rd out of 29, the standard being very high in England so we were happy.
The Show jumping was on Wednesday and our team was 6th into the arena. They went in team order in the morning, Nuala Ryan, Joan Widger, Rachael Blackmore and Natasha Corballis were the team and much to our delight three clear rounds gave us a zero score the first team to achieve this. Having shown it could be achieved the next team also finished on zero and by lunchtime 6 teams had joined us to go into the lead.
After lunch teams jumped one team member at a time. Nuala Ryan was first in with Orions Dela and went clear, the first double clear of the day!! There was much excitement in the camp. Unfortunately for Joan and Kellys Gold Mist a clear eluded them but as there had not been many clears her score still left us amongst the top on the leader board. Rachael and Fiddles were our third member in and another magnificent clear over which was a very testing course left us the only team which could still finish on an overall score of zero, but we needed another clear round. Marc Davern our team trainer was giving marvellous support down in the pocket. Our last member to go was Natasha Corballis on Fernhill Golden Snitch, the youngest member of the team at only 14, a clear would guarantee victory – you could have heard a pin drop, I think every Irish supporter jumped each fence with her and to our absolute delight they were clear. The celebrations began before Natasha left the ring. Tipperary had done it we had won the British Pony Club Championships!!
Nuala at 20 was our oldest member and said she would be leaving the Pony Club on a high and was thrilled with her success. Joan on her return took and passed her H test – Well done Joan! She is qualified for the final in the classic and we wish her the best of luck. Rachael had already been on the winning games team in the RDS, what a versatile rider, Natasha has the honour of representing her club in the event championships in Sansaw in 2004 and the dressage and show jumping in 2005, what a wonderful achievement. Joan was the only member of the team registered wth SJAI so it just shows you don’t have to be regular show jumpers to win this wonderful team event!!
Standing on the podium receiving their red rosettes was a wonderful moment for the four young ladies.

Tipperary take the Festival by Storm - Two Teams to travel to England
It is hard to know where to start in the festival there is so much to cover so I will take it one day at a time but in Mullingar by wednesday evening it was stighly embarassing to be from Tipperary but the party atmosphere was just begining.
Day 1
On the first day in Mullingar it was the Pure Dressage Team of Mike O'Hagan, Natasha Corballis, Anna Geraghty and Valerie Dromey who stole the show winning the Champion Hats Dressage Championship by 31 points and qualify to represent Ireland in Sansaw Park next week as well as laying claim to the Bill Fisk Memorial Trophy. A marvolous achievement with Mike, Natasha and Valerie making it into the ride off with Valerie finishing 5th individually and Natasha coming in, in 9th position.
Our Combined Training contingent also did well with Natasha Corballis coming fifth in the Members Combined Training and Mary Kate Byrne coming third in the Junior Combined Training. Once again many thanks to our trainers on the day Christopher Corballis and Faith Ponsonby for all their hard work.
While this was happening there was much excitement in the Mounted Games Arena as both teams made it into the semi final. Unfortunately the team of Joseph O'Brien, Charlotte Blackmore, Sarah Morohan, Sarah O'Brien and David Bergin were to miss out on the final by just one point. Their fellow team members Kate O'Connor, Kate Mulvihill, Aisling Miklis, Phillip Maher and Charles Croome-Carroll went on to finish third overall in what was to be a hard fought competition. Well done to both teams and many thanks to Donal McGrath for the long hours of training that were put in.
Day 2
Day 2 was Show Jumping Day and in the early hours as the courses, built by Tony Ennis to test even the best of riders, were walked all levels begun to appreciate the challenge ahead of them. To the Senior's first as the team of Nuala Ryan, Joan Widger, Rachel Blackmore and Natasha Corballis were to put in a great exhibition of Show Jumping to finish on zero after the first round equalled only by the Iveagh who as international visiters were not in contension for the IPC Trohpy. Through the second round there were much raised legs by parents and supporters as competitors were in general taking poles left, right and centre. Rachel Blackmore was the first clear round in the second round and ment that with one rider on each team left to jump the team was well poised to take first position. Just before Natasha entered it was confiremed that they couldn't be beaten and both cup and ticket to England was safe however the Iveagh looking to finish 6 points could still be beaten. However one pole knocked loose by Natasha ment the team were to finish on 8 points and winning the IPC Trophy for the first time since trainer Mark Davern was himself still riding for the Tipperary Branch. But the Team were to go on to recive further honnours winning the Team Horsemanship Award. Individually Rachel drew the short straw being the first of four to go in the jump off and recording a very fast time with an unfortunate 4 faults put the pressure on the other competitors and ensured her third position indivually. It was not to end there for the team as Nuala Ryan's second round performance was noted by the judges and earned her the Slavin Indiviual Horsemanship Award.
Sucess was not limited to the Seniors though with the Intermediate team of Niamh Tobin, Faith Morris, Anna Geraghty and Kim Ronan were to put in some super jumping to see them finish in third postition against some very strong opposition.
The Junior Team of Ellen Kehoe, Julia Ponsonby, Rebecca Ronan and Jenni Dowley were to put in two super rounds of jumping to ensure the team finished on a overall score of zero and as Julia Ponsonby and Jenni Dowley prepared for the jump off tension was mounting. The pair completed two very fast clear rounds to secure second place for Tipperary in great style. But the jumping skills of the whole team in the second round had been noted and in recognition of their good riding they were awarded the Team Horsemanship award.
A huge congratulations to the Trainers on the day - Mark Davern, Mary Doyle, Faith Ponsonby and Christopher Corballis. Also many thanks to Pat Walsh for putting on the Show Jumping Training Days.
The second day also saw activity in the Mounted games Arena with the Under 10's taking to the field both teams made it to semi-final and were unlucky not to go further. Well done to all who took part and many thanks to trainer Vicki Heaslop for all her hard work.
I finish by congratulating all who represented their Branch at all competitions and championships throughout the summer, Tipperary is a very active club and its sucesses are due to more then can be listed. But to parents, trainers, ponies and most of all every club member a huge thanks and congratulations for the continued level of dedication and effort put in. Lastly to the two teams traveling to England the best of luck and above all have fun.

Junior's Win the Tommy Brennan Trophy at the Horse Trial Championships
This year saw the Horse Trials Championship move south to Balindenisk with four teams finishing in the top six in their respective competitions as well as some super individual performances. However it was the Juniors who stole the day with the Team of David Hannigan on Borrovale Lad; Joseph O'Brien on Rincé; Ciara O'Connor on Mystic Meg and Craig O'Connor on Shadow winning the Junior Team Competition and taking home the Tommy Brennan Trophy. However it was a close run affair with the Tipperary white team finishing just 1.3 points behind them in 3rd Place. The Tipperary White team of Susie Morris, Julia Ponsonby, Mary Kate Byrne and Tim O'Hagan did extremely well to finish so high up. In the Individual Arena Competitions the Tipp Branch was also well represented with Joseph O'Brien winning his arena, Craig and Julia both took second in theis respective arena's, Mary Kate came third in the pink arena just beating Ciara who 6th place, and in the green arena Susie took fourth place with Rachel Dowley on Catch up Quick taking 6th postition.
In the Members Competition it was nail biting stuff as teams battled it out for the Rose Bowl and a trip to England. But it was not to be, the Duhallow held onto their lead after cross country and went on to win but Tipperary was not to be left out with both of their teams finishing in the ranking. The team of Mike O'Hagan, Peter Hannigan, Josh Halley and Nuala Ryan finished in third place just five points behind the winners and the team of Gillian Burke, Fiona Ryan, Natasha Corballis and Rachel Blackmore finished fifth. Individually saw Peter Hannigan take first postion in his arena as well as third position in the Red Mills League which was won by Gillian Burke another super performer throughout the qualifiers and championship and deservadly takes a share of the Bursary. Also placed indvidually was Mike O'Hagan and Rachel Blackmore both third in their respective arena's.
In the Intermdiate Competition a number of good performances over what many claimed was the strongest of the three tracks relatively saw Anna Geraghty take fifth place in her arena. Kim Ronan getting a prize for the best dressage in her arena and Claire Lonergan coming sixth in her arena.
A huge thanks to the team trainers - Christopher Corballis, Emma Ponsonby, Faith Ponsonby and Nicky Cassidy who spent many hours on course walks and who put in a huge effort to see that all 27 of our competitors were taken care of. Well done to all who took part and huge credit must be given to parents, riders and horses alike who put in hours of preperation and hard work.

Tipperary Win RDS Senior Games Final
The Senior Games team put in a spectacular performance in the RDS Senior Games final, winning 3 of the 4 sessions over the two days which is in itself no small achievement and yet with one game to play the Tipperary Camp were in celebration as those keeping score knew that they could not be beaten. So after two days of hard work the team of Nicholas Delehanty on Stormer; Rachael Blackmore on Smokie; Craig O'Connor on Hammer; Jack Lonergan on Lady and Ethan Ahearne on Willow took home a horde of red rossettes after truely earning their position at the top of Mounted Games.
A huge thanks to team trainer Chris Ahearne for his dedication throughout the year and all parents and supporters who helped towards this great victory.

Easter Review
We have had a very busy Easter holidays and we would like to thank everybody for their help in organising each activity. We had great fun in Grove on good Friday, due to the weather we had to postpone the cross country so we had a scavenger hunt in the woods! Each team set off with a list of 16 items to find and after an hour each team had to return with whatever they had found. The winning team was Charlie Carroll, Emer Croke, Niamh Croke and Aisling Barrett, well done to Aisling for wearing her Pony Club badge as this item proved one of the hardest to be found! Everyone enjoyed the Easter eggs.
The cross country training at Kedrah proved very beneficial to all those attending the championships and we would like to thank Pat and Anne Meagher for opening up so much of the course. Katie, Faith and Polly were our instructors and we would like to thank them too.
We had record numbers representing our club at the championships. In the teams of 3 there were Valerie Dromey, Ruth McGarry & Gillian Burke(our reigning champions), Peter O'Donnell, Josh Halley and Mike O'Hagan, and Niamh Tobin, Jean Meagher and Katie Toppin. Well done to Valerie, Ruth & Gillian who came 8th in this championship class.
In the junior pairs we had Jack Kennedy & Mary Kate Byrne, Kim & Heather Ronan, Tim O'Hagan & Robert Barrett, Craig O'Connor & Ethan Ahearne, Ciara O'Connor & Emma Meagher, Jane O'Brien & Maire O'Neill, and Rebecca and Mark Ronan. The highest placed of these pairs won the O'Connor cup and Emma Meagher and Ciara O'Connor were our worthy winners with Tim O'Hagan and Robert Barrett a close second!!
In the afternoon pairs Tipperary came 1st & 2nd - Valerie Dromey & Josh Halley were 1st with the fastest clear of the day and Ruth McGarry & Niamh Tobin were a very close 2nd.
The junior singles were the final class of the day and Tipp had 1st and 2nd again!! Craig O'Connor won this competition and Emma Meagher was 2nd.
We would like to congratulate all the Tipperary competitors on their standard of turnout and riding. We all had a fun day and look forward to next year.
The summer schedule will be out at the end of this month so you can plan your holidays!!!!

We would like to thank all those who supported and participated in our Sponsored Ride, together with money collected from the Trail Ride in Kilcooley, we have raised about 2,000 to be split between the tSunami Appeal and the Handicapped School in Cashel. Our thanks to Charles Blackmore and Faith Ponsonby for oganising two such fun days.
The Junior Committee have more plans for this year including a Newsletter and so would like any contributions and articles from members. Anyone who is 15 and interested in joining the committee would be very welcome, please let Clare have your names.
Those interested in putting their names forward for the H & A test must do so as soon as possible.
The venue for the Hunter Trial Championships has been changed and will now be in Gurteen College, Nenagh. The age for the Junior Pairs has been raised to under 15yrs on 1.1.05 so would those interested in going please let Clare know asap. If you do not have a preferred partner or team we will try to find someone for you. We would like to see you at the training on 24th March and to see you compete at the Scarteen Pony Club Hunter Trials or if you cannot make this, let me know and we will try to find an alternative venue. This year will be difficult as Easter is early but as our club at present holds the National Team Title I hope we will have a few teams representing us to hold onto the cup.!!! Teams of 3 are under 21yrs and over 12 yrs on 1.1.05. We have decided to award our own OConnor Cup to the highest placed Tipperary Pair at the Championships as we are not holding our own Hunter Trials this year, but the Minis will have their fun cross country day at Grove as usual.
Remember if you do not have a membership card you will not be able to compete, so if you have not paid your subscription please do so immediately as it can take up to 3 weeks to get cards back. If you have lost your form please get another one from Susan, we really do need all this information, when completed please return form and money to Rosemary ODonnell asap.
We have a new Horse Trials Dressage Test this year and the Junior age is now raised to under 15yrs on 1.1.05. Our own Event at Kilcooley is 16th July so keep this date free.
Wishing you all a very happy Easter.
